Sombrero Printmaking & Sombrero Doodles
Dave is a Chesterfield-based printmaker, artist and tutor. He's lived in Chesterfield since the start of 2020.
He discovered printmaking at Sheffield College in 2015, after signing up for a graphic design course which was cancelled—instead, he took the option of switching to the printmaking course and repeated the 10-week course a further two times after falling in love with the methods and creativity which he learned.
Dave's work is now sold online via Etsy, Redbubble and TeePublic and also in local shops, galleries and cafes. He also teaches printmaking, especially lino printing, and also runs community-based art projects in the local area.
He's been self-employed full-time since January 2022, after a couple of decades of working mainly in the financial services industry.
From lino printing and textured backgrounds to colorful digital doodles, Dave’s work finds personality in cats, aliens, toys, and the everyday ideas that make him smile.
I love creating fun doodles, often taking inspiration from what's happening in the world at that time. This long-necked alien was designed during the 2026 World Cup.
This is a lino print of how I imagine my cat, called Unicorn, would look if she were an Egyptian queen cat. She has diva energy and I wanted to capture her looking regal. The background was made using Gelli-Plate printing, with the texture made with bubble wrap.
I had the idea of doing illustrations of animals doing their best to speak “foreign” languages. The first one I did was this cat, trying to learn dog so he could speak to his canine friends.
I have a corner of my studio dedicated to Lego. My all-time favourite minifigures are the classic space Lego figures. This is one of many designs I've made for my online shops.
Artists, say hello
Make something that sticks?
Email Retro Callback with a short introduction, a link to your shop or portfolio, and 3–5 original designs for display. Transparent-background PNG files are preferred. Artists may also attach a shop logo as a transparent-background PNG for display beside their profile. Include the matching product links so we can verify the work and send collectors to the right place. Submissions should be original, independent, and family-friendly.
Good to know: The email opens with the same questions and submission agreement for every artist. Complete the prompts, leave the agreement in place, and type your full name where indicated. Features are curated, free to submit, and never guaranteed.
